It’s like someone took my life and wrote about it.
Except my British boyfriend is not a Duke. Too bad honestly; we could use the money.
Smitten by the Brit is the second in a series by Melonie Johnson, a local author whom I met at a romance novel seminar. She was lovely and the series seemed fun, so I jumped in with this title not realizing it was the second in a series. I will say this series does not need to be read in order. The couple from the first book, Getting Hot with the Scot, is featured throughout, but I don’t think it’s necessary to read that book in order to enjoy this one.
Bonnie Blythe is a Shakespeare loving instructor living in Chicago with her longtime fiance, Gabe. Gabe is a dick. She comes home early from a Shakespeare themed party and stumbles upon Gabe having sex with another woman in her bed. Rather than go all “woe is me” protagonist, Bonnie tells Gabe to fuck off and goes to stay in a hotel for a few days while he clears his shit out of their apartment. As this is happening, she is reigniting a flirtatious relationship with Theo Wharton, a hot British guy who happens to be the best friend of her bff’s fiance (the couple who stars in the first book in the series). Theo is handsome, kind, and the perfect love interest for a book like this. There’s less will they won’t they in this title; more will they, won’t they figure the hell out how to keep this going, which I enjoyed. There’s not a lot of waiting and pining until the couple finally hooks up, and the rest of the book is devoted to how they move on from hooking up with one another. Of course there’s drama, but it all felt relatively real and wasn’t painful to read.
I loved this book. I have a real passion for American girl/British boy romance novels (WONDER WHY) and this one lived up to the hype. It’s set in Chicago, where I’m from, and the characters take the other to the EXACT SAME PLACES my boyfriend and I took one another on our first dates in England/the States. HOW Melonie Johnson found my life story to write it, I know not. I do know that this is a wholly enjoyable romance novel that gives you everything you want and I am very excited to have a new series author in the romance world.
