Oh how I love dumb but nice boys.

Takeo Goda is a big, big guy with a big, big heart and absolutely no self-esteem. his best friend is Sunakawa, a noteably gorgeous dude who women lose their minds over constantly. Because of his size and looks, Takeo has accepted the fact that he is unattractive and lucky to have a friend like Sunakawa who tolerates him no matter what. He has no real self-esteem and assumes everyone is just nice to him in order to get close to Sunakawa, and he is very protective over him.

This begin to change when the pair meet Yamato, a girl their age who is being harassed on the train they’re on. Takeo steps in to help Yamato, and the two keep crossing paths. Takeo finds himself falling hard for her, but can’t believe a world exists when she would like him, especially with Sunakawa around, but Yamato absolutely has her heart set on Takeo because of his kind heart. The two take a chance on getting to know one another, but between Takeo’s commitments and Yamato’s friends constantly belittling Yamato for dating someone so unattractive, their relationship is on the rocks before it really even begins!

This series is really, really sweet and I can see why it’s so popular! It emphasizes not only assessing someone’s character over their physical attributes, but also what it means to be a good friend. Although they have many differences, Sunakawa and Takeo are the best of friends and are there for one another despite everything that comes up. Takeo is loyal to everyone who he cares about, and seeing him have so little self love does hurt. This is a great series that makes you feel emotional for the characters without being a downer, and I am excited to see it continue!
