Super enjoyable! Love this author!
What a fun romance!
Olivia Dade is an author I discovered via a Library seminar and I have looked forward to every release of hers ever since. I find her to be the best romance author currently publishing because of her realistic and witty characters and often very fun plots, and Spoiler Alert is no exception.
If you love fandom or fanfiction and romance (which let’s be real, why would you read this if not) you are going to love this book. It’s clear Dade was a fanfiction author at some point and the tiny in-jokes she includes for fandom nerds made me happy.
The man fandom in this novel is a show called Gods of the Gates which surrounds the main character Aeneas, played by Marcus Caster-Rupp. Let’s be real, this is a thinly veiled Game of Thrones reference, right? Complete with a hyphenated last name (what’s up Nikolaj Coster-Waldau). Anyway, Marcus plays dumb in life and in his show because that’s what’s expected of him, but in reality, he writes fanfiction about his character and uses it as an outlet.
Enter April, a hardcore fan of the book series Marcus’s show is based on and a fanfic writer and shipper herself. She thinks the show has assassinated her favorite character, Lavinia, and his relationship with Aeneas and thus also writes fanfiction. What she doesn’t know is that Book!AeneasWouldNever, her fanfic writing partner, is ACTUALLY Marcus. When she posts a photo of herself in cosplay as Lavinia and it goes viral, Marcus steps in to defend her against trolls, asks her on a date, and sparks fly.
As they start to get to know one another and Marcus lets his dumb guy act fall more and more, tensions rise concerning his job, their writing, and if their worlds would ever be able to meld.
This book rules. It’s witty and fun but the characters are well-rounded and feel real. Marcus’s issues regarding his persona and how fans treat him seem incredibly true to life, as do both his and April’s struggles with their parents and family. This was a pretty quick read and I was super into it the entire time. Luckily, there is a sequel coming out this summer starring Marcus’s co-star and best friend, who has one of the more interesting side-stories in the novel!
