What a weird book.
Well, this is an odd one. I picked this up as we are doing a cowboy holiday romance display in my library and I wanted to read and write a review of one. Cowboys usually aren’t something I am remotely into with my romantic interests, so this was a new sub-genre for me, and I don’t think it’s anything I’d go back to.
Madison West is a horse trainer looking to have a no-strings-attached night out with the guy she’s seeing and hopefully, getting laid for the first time in a decade. Of course, the weather strikes and the power goes out in her home, causing the date to be ruined. In the meantime, she runs across the street to get help from Sam McCormack, a farrier who works on her family ranch. There’s tension between them and they agree to a friends-with-benefits sexual situation for the two weeks leading up to Christmas. Unsurprisingly, they have a lot of trauma from past relationships and don’t know how to communicate, but are clearly interested in more from one another.
This book was so damn weird. I don’t even know why it felt so odd, but the pacing felt all over the place. They jump into bed together very quickly and then immediately argue about what they are to one another for the next several chapters. Once we hit the last third of the book it changes form dramatically, and our main characters reveal really deep-set traumas they have suffered that feel a bit out of nowhere. It’s a steamy romance up until that point and then BAM lots of sad, awful discussion about trauma. Sam is not a likable character for me, I could barely stand reading about him, whereas Madison was annoying but also had a backbone and had clearly grown from her experiences. At least one person in this book went to therapy.
The sex scenes were all fine but the dirty talk had me cringing. I think Sam was so unattractive to me, I found it hard to see anything romantic or interesting in their relationship. Meh all around.
