What the hell
Romantic Killer is such an odd manga and not one I would pick up again. Also, the description of this book on GoodReads is so ridiculously incorrect for what this manga is really about; it’s peak false advertising.
Anzu is a teenage girl living an everyday life who happens not to be interested in men and relationships at this point in her life. She’s a chill teenager who wants to hang out at home with her cat and video games, and get through school in one piece. It turns out Japan’s birth rate has dipped, which is affecting the world’s magic. Thus, Anzu is attacked by a fairy named Riri, who takes away everything Anzu loves, sends her parents to America, and sets up a series of meet-cutes involving practical stranger teenage boys coming to her house.
Yep. That’s the plot.
I didn’t understand how the lack of birth rates in Japan ends up falling on the shoulders of a 16-year-old with no interest in romance, but that’s manga for you. It felt bizarre and exploitative that this child no longer gets to enjoy anything about her life and is forced to live alone, having weird situations with boys she barely knows, just so the fairy/magical world can have a resurgence? I don’t know; parts of this were very adorable and cute, and others made me want to vomit. I don’t think I’d read Volume 2, but I understand why other people dig this series.
