Typical Abby Jimenez!

Abby Jiminez has a particular style to her writing and storylines, and this one may be the peak of that style. Her books are often hit or miss, mainly because they greatly depend upon your move and mindset while reading. For me, Abby’s books are fantastic and realistic, which sometimes can make them a bit dour and hard to get into as I usually use romance novels as an escape.

Dr. Briana Ortiz is a successful doctor amid a downward spiral. She’s finally moving forward after her divorce is final, she’s yearning for a promotion that she’s sure she won’t get, and her brother is still stick and in need of a kidney. She’s overwhelmed, emotional, and on the edge of losing it. She has real trust issues and tries to plow through the world independently, but meeting Jacob changes things.

Jacob is a new doctor at her hospital and the one she is convinced will be getting the promotion she wants. He is anxiety-ridden, and I do not wish to underemphasize how bad his anxiety is. It impedes his ability to speak with his co-workers kindly, and he is nicknamed Dr. Death after he loses several patients in one shift. He’s only working at Briana’s hospital because his ex ran off with his brother, and he needed to transfer to get away. After accidentally speaking unkindly to Briana, he writes her a letter as an apology to try and state how he feels without his anxiety coming into play. The letter is well-received, and Briana and Jacob begin a friendship where they support one another through their challenging moments and fake date so Jacob isn’t alone at his brother and ex’s wedding.

This is a great romance novel if you want a true story, not just a quick, feel-good read. There’s a lot of emotion here, and both characters feel very real, almost too much. It’s so relatable I couldn’t read it in one go (like I do with most books), as it was getting a bit heavy for my taste. As long as you’re aware of that going in, you shouldn’t have any trouble with this romance, and it’s a perfect summer read.
