Absolutely fantastic!
This is the perfect book for any book club! When my mother suggested we read this for my library book club, I thought it sounded like an excellent fit, and now that I’ve read it I agree that mom’s are (almost) always right.
Killers of a Certain Age centers around 4 lifelong co-workers and spy/assassins who are boarding a cruise to celebrate their retirement from The Museum, the secret organization they work for. However while on the boat, they notice a fellow younger member of their organization on board and quickly realize he is only here for one reason; to eliminate them. So begins a game of cat and mouse in which the organization responsible for training these women into being killers is the same one now trying to kill them.
The women band together and quickly realize there is no one they can trust aside from themselves. Although they’re in their sixties, the women are trained killers and know how to navigate their situation by utilizing safe houses and secret identities around the world. The book is incredibly fast-paced and full of exciting adventures and locals. The characters are well-defined and fun to read about, while also being total badasses. The fact that this book has yet to turn into a movie or miniseries is mind-boggling to me, as it’s basically a novel version of the movie Red with Helen Mirren. The side characters also shine in this, including Kevin, everyone’s favorite cat.
I highly recommend this title for your book club! There’s plenty of topics to discuss in this book, from the way we treat retired women as a whole to the secret organizations that exist to protect our world and whether we believe they exist or not. For being Raybourn’s first contemporary novel, I was incredibly impressed and I hope she decides to do more of this in the future.
