Associate Professor Akira Takatsuki’s Conjecture Vol. 1

A total surprise!

This manga was a total surprise! I bought it on a whim, and I really enjoyed it, far more than expected.

Naoya is a young man attending university who had a strange supernatural experience when he was very young. Ever since that night, Naoya has been able to detect lies. If he hears someone talking, he can tell whether or not that person is telling the truth or not, and while that sounds like an interesting superpower, it negatively affects Naoya’s life. After enrolling in a very popular folklore class at his university, Naoya meets his professor, Akira Takatsuki. Akira is offbeat, rude at times, and incredibly passionate. He sees something interesting in Naoya and asks him to be his new assistant.

Naoya and Akira make an incredibly interesting team. Akira has all the brains and knows everything there is to know about folklore but knows almost nothing about how to be a polite human being. When people come to them to inform them of their supernatural experiences, Akira is so excited he practically jumps with joy while the people there are terrified for their lives. That’s where Naoya comes in and reigns in Akira, keeping him in the moment and compassionate. The duality of the two is fascinating, and I loved the lore regarding the different types of folklore within Japan.

Loved this whole volume, and I can’t wait to read the next volume.
