Meh.
While I enjoyed the first volume of What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim, Volume two, while enjoyable, did lean into the issues I have with the series.
In this volume, Youngjun is even more determined to win the affection of his soon-to-be ex-secretary, Miso. He invites Miso to dinner, takes her around an amusement park, takes an interest in her life before they meet, and goes out of his way to show that he does care for her in his own way. In turn, Miso is beginning to develop more feelings for her boss and finds herself daydreaming about him, even when she is out on a blind date with a man who is relatively perfect for her. Miso and Youngjun are both trying to protect themselves while also falling for one another, and the series does a good job of keeping their relationship moving forward.
My only issue with the series is that Youngjun isn’t quite sympathetic enough as a character for me to root for him and MIso to get together. There is a lot of family drama introduced in this volume, and we see the tension Youngjun has with his older brother, as well as delving into their pasts. That being said, Youngjun is still an ass a lot of the time. I do feel bad for his upbringing and for the issues within their family dynamic as a result, but it still shouldn’t wave away all his current behaviors. I don’t see what Miso likes about him, and the ‘character who hates everyone except for the one pretty girl he likes’ trope wears thin for me at the best of times. I’m sure this will have more reveals that allow us to find Youngjun sympathetic, but for now, I still think Miso could do better.
