Silly and Mean!
Man, if people think kids’ books are messed up now, they haven’t read any Roald Dahl.
I was one of those people. I never grew up reading Roald Dahl books, but my British husband LOVES Roald Dahl and has read every title. His love of Dahl convinced me to give myself the goal of reading all of Dahl’s most famous works, and The Twits is one of his absolute favorites.
The Twits is a fun book about genuinely awful people. Mr. and Mrs. Twit are peak abuse, constantly playing mean-spirited pranks on one another for laughs. They also locked up a family of monkeys and refused to let them go, tricking birds into landing in places, so Mr. Twit can grab and eat them. Five pages into the book, you’re hoping for their downfall, and thankfully it does come about. There’s some dark stuff in this, and I absolutely loved it. I should have known, considering he wrote Matilda, but man. I loved this, and I totally understand why people adore Roald Dahl.
