Sweet and Wholesome
Oh manga, you and your tropes. Midori is a high school freshman who loses her wallet on the first day of school. Luckily, a classmate named Rei Ichijo manages to get it back for her and returns it. Midori is enamored with him for his kindness and wants to go to thank him, only to discover he and his two friends have been suspended for reasons everyone in school is gossiping about. They were suspended for a week but it’s been 10 days with no sight of them. At the same time, Midori is hard up for money as her father abandoned their family and her mother is trying her best alone, so the chairman of the school offers her a deal; he will give her an on campus job to help her family financially (Students aren’t allowed to have jobs) as long as she manages to get Rei and his friends back in school.
If you love good girl/bad boy high school tropes, this one is for you. The boys have their reasons for not wanting to go to school, most of them stemming around being judged by the family they didn’th have a choice to be born into, which is relatable to Midori as a girl with a poor family. She goes out of her way to show them kindness, which is the one thing they respond to. When Midori is in trouble the boys come through to save her because they don’t want anything bad to happen to her because of them. They seem like bad boys but are good-hearted, so it fully fufills the trope. And of course which boy will she fall in love with?! Dun-dun-duuuun!
This is fun. It’s a cute high school manga in which everyone is dealing with things below the surface and obviously issues with parental figures, authority and family are a constant theme. I genuinely enjoyed it quite a bit, so I’m excited to keep reading. Midori is a fun character, helpful and sweet but still has enough of a backbone to know that she’s being used and how to stand up for herself so I’m a fan. I also just realized the author also wrote That Wolf Boy is Mine and Love in Focus, both of which I really enjoyed and were sweet, adorable manga’s so now I know more about what to expect from this series!
